On this week’s episode, Ian and I talk briefly about the new Bruce Springsteen soul covers album Only The Strong Survive that I couldn’t bring myself to actually review in full on the show. We also discuss Matty Healy of The 1975 eating raw meat on stage at Madison Square Garden and the incredible poster for the nü-metal themed 2023 Sick World Festival, which I literally read line by line. (On the sixth line there’s 100 Gecs, Skinny Puppy, and Coal Chamber. Great stuff!)
After that, we dive into the mailbag! Questions include: What is “the modern indie aesthetic?” (There isn’t one?) What band or artist is due for a comeback or rediscovery? (Ian says Tori Amos, did I really say Audioslave?) Oh, and we finally follow through on our bit to do a 10th anniversary analysis of Muse’s The 2nd Law. It … sort of paid off?
In Recommendation Corner, I shouted out an album I’ve been really digging this week: The Late Great Gold Dust by Gold Dust. I slot it next to bands like Wednesday and Knifeplay who also take folky melodies and slather them with shoegaze sonics. Check it out here.
